Monday co-op

This week, it was my turn to lead co-op. I decided on toads for a topic because we see so many at this time of year, and all of the kids love to catch them and hold them. I had some trouble finding toad fingerplays, so I adapted some of the ones that I already knew to make them about toads. For example, we said "1,2,3,4,5! I caught a toad alive! 6,7,8,9,10! I let him go again!" I read one of the stories from "Frog and Toad are Friends". It was the one about Frog waking Toad to enjoy the Spring. We also played a simple hopping game. I play it with my kids at home sometimes, and they love it. Indigo helped me hold one end of a stick, and we let each kid hop over, slowly raising the stick higher and higher. We have some good hoppers in our group!

For craft time, we made toad houses. Tim helped cut "doorways" in yogurt containers, and we primed them brown. At co-op, the kids glued pebbles and pieces of pine cones and other things found in nature onto the toad houses. They turned out very nicely.

Now we just have to decide where to put the toad houses. I have a feeling that a couple will end up in the raspberry patch and a couple will go into the sunflower garden. I will continue to post updates because there has been some talk of adding a few more things before putting the houses outside.
