man & animal block (day 1)

Today we talked for a long time about how humans are different from other animals. Clover and the boys loved the idea that we use our hands for service. They loved listing all of the amazing things that our hands can do. Clover drew a beautiful picture in her main lesson book and made a list titled: With my hands, I.......

With my hands, I....
* hug
* practice violin
* make my bed
* feed Mia (the cat)
* feed Jack Straw (the bird)
* put the hens in the garden
* clean up
* hold hands
* play blocks
* play catch
* sew
* knit
* brush my teeth
* hold little people
* play with Charlotte and all my toys
* push Nova on the swing

work in progress

Tim started on a big project with the kids this weekend. With some wood reclaimed from other projects and lots of cement, they started on our little greenhouse! I'm so excited about this! We have always started seeds in the house, but this will allow us to start so many things early. We have been holding onto the greenhouse glass for the past five years, and now it will finally be put to use!

The humble beginnings of the greenhouse...

The kids had a great time helping with hole digging and cement mixing, but they also ran off to play in the sunshine. Clover helped Nova balance on the fence. Everyone has been practicing fence walking recently.

Nova loves to roll down the hill in the big blue tube! He also spent some time pushing other willing participants down the hill!

There was also a little friendly hen chasing. The hens don't even mind - they're so happy to have green grass again!

beautiful Friday at the park

After so much rain and freezing weather, we finally had a beautiful sunny day at the park.

Bare feet in February!!

We had such a calm and peaceful day. Thanks Carrie!

animal visit!

As a wonderful end to our bull and cow week of Man & Animal block, we visited the farm where we get milk and saw a baby bull (and lots of cows, as usual).

Ofcourse, I also had to take a picture of the goat since I LOVE goats so much!!!

* Note: the baby bull is the one in the pen. The small one with horns is actually a small (female) cow!

co-op

Co-op was held under a snow-heavy sky with a warm fire and lots of bundled up friends. I just love to see kids dressed in all of their Winter layers. They look like little elves in their heavy hoods and knitted hats. We sounded so beautiful today when we sang: "Oh where do you come from you little flakes of snow? Falling, falling, softly falling to the Earth below."

Apple gave heart cookies to all of the kids and told a simple story about Saint Valentine. It was very sweet. I realized while she was telling it that I never knew (as a child) about the person that we celebrate on Valentine's Day. I'm excited about doing a saints block for the boys when they are in second grade. I didn't really do much of one with Clover.

We had some play time and some sitting-around-the-fire-getting-warm time. The February babies blew out their birthday candles after we sang "happy birthday". And we drove home knowing that snow would arrive soon!

We had just enough time to warm up with hot cocoa and start a big bowl of soup. It snowed like crazy between 4:30 and 8:00, and now it has slowed down quite a bit. We are looking forward to snow play bright and early!!!
