A couple of days ago, I was listening to NPR on my way to the grocery store. I hardly ever listen to the news. It has become part of my mission in life to avoid negativity, and hearing about war, terrorism, poverty, and other miscellaneous hardship is just too depressing.
But I was listening for long enough to hear that some people would like to name this past decade The Big Zero. My goodness. How depressing. I couldn't help but think that it sounds so whiny, so sad, so self-centered in some way. The Great Depression almost sounds noble. People had a very hard time, but were able to pull out of it, learn, move forward. Can we do that? Do we have to call the first decade of 2000 the Big Zero? Did absolutely nothing good happen for the world?
My daughter was born in 2000 and all of my children were born during the past decade. May their Light and the Light of all of these children bring us a better next ten years. Let us start right now dreaming and hoping and *planning* for something better. Let us raise these beautiful little spirits to love the planet, love their bodies, love each other regardless of race, religion, politics...
Can we do it?
I have hope. We have to believe in ourselves and in the possibility of what the World could be like if we all worked on it together. We have to stop supporting industries that put other people in horrible situations. We have to love the Earth in every way and work on the healing of our planet. We have to accept others, stop having fear about people who are different from us, embrace even those who do not embrace us. We have to give love freely especially to children. These children are the ones who will make a difference. Can we make the world a better place for them?
Yesterday afternoon, Clover made four tiny walnut shell boats, and on the paper sails she wrote these words: PEACE, COURAGE, PATIENCE, LOVE. May it be so.....

It was a tough and interesting decade for many of us, and yet I agree with you that it's important not to refer to it so negatively...especially for the sake of the kids. Your little walnut shell boats say it all! Happy 2010.
Hi, new to your blog, but completely agree with this post. Both my children were born in the last decade, so it's been a good one for me!! I agree we have to look to the future and plan a positive way forward, especially for the sake of our children. I don't listen to the news either, for the same reasons, and it's amazing the difference it makes to my daily mood not to allow all that negativity in my space everyday. Looking forward to reading more in 2010
Hi, it's a very great blog.
I could tell how much efforts you've taken on it.
Keep doing!
Erin, I've been sitting on this response because your post was so moving to me I couldn't find appropriate words. I still cannot but I am moved and inspired!
I met Mike, got married, had three daughters, and found (or was found by) a wonderful Circle of friends. The past decade hasn't been so bad after all.
I know that I am willing to rise to the challenge of creating a more positive, loving world for our children.
Peace and Blessings,
Carrie
